Innovation And Power

What powers the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe?

PHEV drivetrains combine the power of a gas engine and electric generators powered by a rechargeable battery pack. In the case of the Grand Cherokee 4xe, the setup combines a 2.0-Liter turbocharged Inline-4 cylinder engine with two electric generators. One replaces the traditional alternator, while the other replaces the torque converter in the transmission. The generators are powered by a 400-volt EV battery pack. This setup offers drivers an electric equivalent of 56 MPG, 440 miles of total driving range, and 25 miles of fully electric driving. While the stereotype says that you can't have the fuel economy of a hybrid and plenty of power, this could not be more false for the Grand Cherokee 4xe as it offers 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque! Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe conquered California's daunting Rubicon Trail in full-electric mode to earn its Trail Rated badge! The 4xe powertrain comes mated to a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission driving all four wheels with Jeep's iconic Quadra-Trac II 4x4 system with a two-speed transfer case.

How is the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe charged?

The 4xe system is a plug-in hybrid EV powertrain. So, of course, the main source of charging is through an EV charging cord. All Grand Cherokee 4xe models come standard with a Level 1 EV charger that provides a full charge in approximately 12 hours. Meanwhile, a Level 2 EV charger that cuts the charging time down to just two hours is available for purchase. Additionally, other high-tech methods are used to charge the battery pack while on the move. For instance, Brake Regeneration supplies electric energy to the battery pack when the vehicle slows down, recharging the battery to increase or maintain its state of charge. In addition, the Max Regen feature can be activated to use a more aggressive regenerative braking calibration. Max Regen begins the brake regeneration process as soon as the driver lets off the gas pedal. This gives more energy back to the battery and stops the car faster.

What is E-Selec?

To put drivers in control of the 4xe's usage, Jeep created the E-Selec system. The three E-Selec buttons, Hybrid, Electric, and E-Save, are found on the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel. Hybrid is the default setting and uses a mixture of gas and electric power, depending on how much power is requested. When decelerating, the 4xe will disengage the gas engine until the accelerator is pressed. Electric mode can be switched on as long as the battery has at least 1% of its charge remaining, providing nearly silent driving with zero tailpipe emissions. Lastly, E-Save mode disables the electric generators, operating solely on gas power to save the battery and recharge through brake regeneration.
